Tile Work Information

All of our tile are made with durable, high-fire stoneware. Each is individually pressed into a openable, beveled mold with a rolling pin. They are cleaned and decorated at the "leather hard" stage of drying. Slip (a creamy, colored clay mixture) is brushed, sprayed , or trailed (like cake decorating) on the tile. Tile may be incised (scratched), carved, or cut to custom sizes at this point. Muralled tile are laid out like a giant canvas and decorated as a painting. After an initial firing to 1650 deg. f., they are coated with a semi transparent glaze and fired to 2400 deg. f . Special racks called tile setters are used.

We use three main glazes: an almost opaque matte yellow, a buttermilk semi-gloss, and a clear gloss. All are rated seven plus on the hardness scale, suitable for walls, counters, and even floors! Our standard tile is 6" x 6" with 5.25" x 6" and 5.25" x 5.25" available. These sizes make any standard size vanity top available with whole tile sizes. Tile are precut for edging, openings, even electrical outlets! Vanity tops have precut faucet holes and are cut to fit a matching sink or your custom sink.
